Rap Music… Really?!

Ok, so I am going to rant and let it out, and I may offend some and for that I am truly sorry and apologize up front. Caveat to today's post, as well:  I am not judging. I am not worthy to judge others.  Also, we love our gym and the people there.  But, seriously...

I was at the gym the other day and I came to the conclusion that I have no idea what the point of rap music is.

No, this is not a new epiphany for me, but I definitively concluded that it is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard, especially modern-day rap. This point is where I very stealthily walked over to JT, stared at him for a second and very quietly asked him the serious question, “why do people listen to this stuff?”  To which JT responded with a smile and a shake of the head with a “I have no clue" response. We then proceeded to ignore the blaring ridiculousness of the song that was currently playing and focused our minds back to the task at hand... our workout!

Have you really set down and listened to the lyrics? I mean really set down and listened? I feel as though I lose a few brain cells every time I do, so I will not be offended if at this point you say no, absolutely not. But, the lyrics are the most elementary, non-thoughtful links of words that I have ever heard. The constant need for materialistic items, degradation, drugs and sex is slightly unnerving and nauseating to say the least.

Do people in real life truly brag about how much drugs they have taken, how many women they have had and dumped, how much bling and violence and disrespect one can have for authority in today’s society? Is that what is important in today’s society? I am confused… last I checked we have more riveting issues and life-changing topics then these.

Music should be about skill.  Music is a true art, and in my opinion, should be treated as such.  Am I wrong? Music should run a bit deeper, have some passion, possess true thought and artistic genius, intertwined between the notes being played. Maybe I am just getting old and not relating to our younger generation, I don’t know, but seriously why are we allowing this nonsense to fill our minds and ultimately our thoughts?

I don’t know about you, but those words get stuck in my head for days, and it is all I can do to keep them out! I am serious when I stress that I think that I lose IQ points as I listen to the words coming out of their mouths. The lyrics could seriously be put together by kindergartners given the simplicity and lack of depth that the songs possess.

Besides the simplicity of the lyrics structure, I am confused with the messages that these songs portray to our already needy, and for lack of a better term, lazy generation. Life is not a never-ending party of drugs, alcohol and sex. We have true meaning and purpose in life, and last I checked the crap topics in rap music are not included in these values. Morals have been thrown out with the dirty laundry and no boundaries are set in place.  Do you really think life is a masquerade of whatever you feel or want, without any structure or discipline?

If you want to be called a music artist, then own it.  Put on your big girl/boy panties, step up to the plate and write like a true artist, not a fly by night school kid. You have a responsibility to positively influence others’ lives, especially our younger generation. It is a responsibility that can influence either positively or negatively. Don’t blind us with messages of shiny objects and fat butts... show us what is truly important and valuable in life.

Ok, stepping off of my ranting soap box now. I am a fairly open-minded individual, but some things I do have an opinion on. For now, I am dropping the mike and walking away. My tirade against this noisy nonsense is complete.

Have a great day, and let’s lyrically inspire and love more!
